We Put On The new Man
Thank God there is a New Man. The New Man is not a reformed old man, but a new creation, created by God, birthed by the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 4:23-24 tells us to be renewed in the spirit of your mind and to put on the New Man which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness. Notice that this portion of scripture is talking to born-again Christians. God is telling Christians to put on the New Man which refers to not only to our new identity but new behavior that reflects our new identity.
Ephesians 4:22-24 (NKJV)22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
2Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
The new man is created after God in righteousness and true holiness. If you are a born-again Christian then you are a New Creation of God. To be created after God means "down from" or "according to". As a born-again Christian you are no longer a Natural Man but a New Man with your new identity in the resurrected Christ. Not only do you have a new identity but you have a new nature - one of righteousness and true holiness!! 2 Peter 1:2-3 tells us that we are partakers (partners, associates) with the Divine Nature.
2 Peter 1:2-4 (NKJV)2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
All Creation Is Watching
I know what you are thinking-If I have a new nature then why do I act the way I act? Why do I struggle in so many areas of life? A very good question. The answer is this- You are not in heaven yet. God has given you a life to live in the context of struggle. On earth we prove God to be more powerful than evil. Our life on earth is to walk out the victories of Christ over the devil and his lies. Our victory over darkness proves God's wisdom in redeeming a people through Christ. All creation is watching!
Salvation Is Proved In Battle
Jesus has won a very great victory for you. He has defeated sin, defeated the devil, and defeated the world for you. Your job as a Christian is to walk out the victories of Jesus Christ, over evil, using the weapons He gives. God could have translated you directly into heaven the very second you were born-again. But instead He chose to leave you in this demon possessed, sin infected world.
The identity of the new man lies in the resurrected Christ.
What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: 6Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. 7For he that is dead is freed from sin. 8Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: 9Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. 10For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. 11Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.
The Gospel Results In a New Nature
Our sin is atoned for by our union with Jesus Christ in His death and burial. His death is the penalty mandated by law for sin. His burial is the proof of His death. Because we are joined to Christ in His death and burial, God counts me as having died and also buried, therefore satisfying the just penalty of death for sin. The soul that sinneth it shall die. Ezekiel 18:4 Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin. Hebrews 9:24
But I need more than death and burial-I need to live! Not only have I died in Him, but I am joined to Him in His resurrection. The above portion of scripture, Romans 6, tells me (verse 5,7,11) that I am joined to Christ in His resurrection! I have been given new life through the resurrection of Christ. Verse 11 tells me - just as Christ is dead to sin (through death and burial) I am also dead to sin and just as Christ has risen from the dead and is now alive to God (sin having been dealt with) I have also risen from the dead and am alive to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The Resurrection Is proof of My New Identity
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 1Peter 1:3
Armor of God is a Bible study that teaches the Christian how to put on the new man by using the weapons of God, listed in Ephesians 6:10-18, and applying them at heart level - the thoughts, emotions, desires, priorities, ambitions are brought into agreement with God and the lies of darkness that bind us are rejected!
The Weapons of God
God bless you as you walk through this study, may the Lord bring you new freedom as you use the weapons He has provided.
